Why is WCWS always held in Oklahoma? According to Texas softball coach Mike White, the NCAA should rotate it.
Is the location of the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City giving the powerhouse Oklahoma program an advantage every season? Absolutely, stated Texas coach Mike White. Will it ever change, at least while White is still coaching college softball? Absolutely not, he said with a smile, as his No. 1 Longhorns boarded a charter jet to Oklahoma City on Tuesday morning to prepare for Thursday’s WCWS opening against Stanford.
“I’d love to see it rotate eventually, but probably not in my tenure as a coach,” he stated. “We get it, but it is a huge advantage obviously for Oklahoma.” The Oklahoma campus in Norman is about 20 miles south of Devon Park, which presently hosts the WCWS and was previously known as the USA Softball Hall of Fame Complex. Oklahoma City has a decades-long association with the NCAA and USA Softball, and a recently renewed contract between the NCAA, USA Softball, and Oklahoma City will retain the WCWS in its current location until at least 2035.
This week marks White’s seventh trip to the WCWS, having previously led Oregon to Oklahoma City five times and Texas once in 2022.
