SEC News: Les Miles sues LSU over annulled wins, rendering him ineligible for College Football Hall of Fame.
Les Miles is well-known as a character. Whether it’s eating grass, saying odd things in his peculiar, intense, midwestern style, or having any number of special teams gaffes on his teams, he is a character well-entrenched in the collective mind of college football fans. For that reason alone, he appears to be an easy choice for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame. However, recent events have made this unlikely.
As has been reported recently, being elected to the College Football Hall of Fame needs a particular win percentage: you must have won 60% of your total games or you are ineligible. The late, incomparable Mike Leach failed to meet this condition, prompting a strong public outcry.
Les Miles comfortably met the win percentage criterion. That was until recently. I realize this may surprise you, but LSU has reportedly engaged in questionable activities in the past. This involves placing a player—OL Vadal Alexander—on the field who was found to have received ineligible benefits, invalidating all of his wins. Because Miles was the coach at the time, these wins were removed from his record, and his overall coaching record fell to 108-73. That is a 59.7% winning percentage. And no, they do not round up.
As a result, Miles has launched a lawsuit against LSU, The National Football Foundation, and the College Football Hall of Fame, saying that he was removed from eligibility without due process.
