Texas A&M baseball coach apologizes for two fans disturbing the Florida dugout with reported insults about the deceased batboy.
Texas A&M head baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle has apologized for the acts of two supporters who were ejected from the Aggies’ College World Series game versus Florida after being observed yelling into the Gators’ dugout in the second inning. The two supporters, both dressed in Texas A&M clothing, reportedly mentioned the Gators’ bat child, who died in 2021 after his father was suspected of killing his two boys before committing himself and setting fire to his home. The 11-year-old boy’s family was close with Florida head coach Kevin O’Sullivan, on whom the fans reportedly directed their remarks.
To begin his news conference, Schlossnagle wished those who celebrated a Happy Father’s Day, but he quickly blasted the acts of the two fans following his team’s 3-2 victory over the Gators. “I want to apologize on behalf of Texas A&M for whatever the heck went on over there in that dugout,” Schlossnagle stated. “Whoever those two individuals are, they do not reflect what Texas A&M is about, and they should not return. “Let’s not let those two guys back into the park.”
The Omaha (Nebraska) Police Officers Association issued a statement praising officials for intervening and suggested the two fans never return for the College World Series. “Heckling an opponent baseball club about their batboy’s heartbreaking demise is completely inappropriate. “We’re glad our officers and security threw this duo out of Charles Schwab Field,” the group said in a statement on X. “You’re no longer welcome in this city and should be banned for life from future College World Series.”
On3 Florida reporter Nick de la Torre described the moment the two supporters started heckling, albeit there is no footage of what they said. However, during the game’s broadcast, the fans were seen being hauled away. “They were down by the Florida dugout,” de la Torre wrote during the game. “[Gator pitcher] Brandon Neely had to be held back.” Not sure what was said, but it appeared to be heated down there.”
Another account from the game stated that the hecklers were “yelling at Coach O’Sullivan, saying that he killed someone and [should] be ashamed.” “Assistants on the gator staff started throwing F-bombs at them and went to run up to them, but the cops had wrangled them by then,” a post on X read, alongside a photo of the hecklers. It is unclear whether the College World Series will suspend the two supporters.
