As part of their ongoing coaching search, the Lakers visit with Sam Cassell.
Sam Cassell is considered a strong candidate for the vacant Los Angeles Lakers head coaching position. JJ Redick and James Borrego will compete for the position as Boston Celtics’ veteran assistants. The Lakers are allegedly casting a broad net in their coaching hunt. However, Redick is currently considered the front-runner. Nonetheless, Rob Pelinka and the front office have allegedly began meetings with some of their prospects, including Cassell. According to Shams Charania and Jovan Buha of The Athletic, Los Angeles has conducted or will hold ‘formal talks’ with a number of potential prospects.
Boston will already lose one of its top assistants at the end of the season. Charles Lee has agreed to become the Charlotte Hornets’ next head coach. The possibility of losing Cassell could force Joe Mazzulla to replace his coaching staff for the second consecutive season.
Nonetheless, Cassell has earned the opportunity to take on a head coaching post. He has spent the previous 15 years as an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers, and Boston Celtics.
Whether he gets the job with the Lakers or has to wait a lot longer, it appears that Cassell will be managing a club soon.
